Our Love Story - Part 3 - The Way to a Man’s Heart

(I’m telling the story of how my husband and I met, dated, and got married. If you missed it, you can read Part 2 HERE.)

It was nearing the end of the semester. My feelings for Matt were still there and we were still building a friendship, but that was it. One Monday evening after class, right before we were supposed to go meet Josh and Matt for supper, Betsey and I last minute decided we wanted to go off campus to eat. But we knew the guys were waiting for us, so we hurried to our meeting spot to let them know we were going off campus. As we walked up, I remember taking one look at Matt leaning against the wall and almost changed my mind. But then I shook it off.

“No.” I told myself. “Don’t be one of those girls who works every plan around a guy.”

So we told them we were going to go to Fazoli’s for supper instead. We turned and began walking away. I took a few steps, stopped, turned around, and said, “Do you guys want anything?”

“Bring us some breadsticks if you can!” Matt replied. Then off we went.

Betsey and I had a good meal and a really great conversation about God and how He was working in our lives. I remember feeling so encouraged after talking with her. I knew I had made the right decision to come to supper with just her. We were about to leave when I remembered the breadsticks. I went to the counter to order a dozen. The cashier was a young guy who gave me the breadsticks for free. I didn’t complain.

We got back on campus just in time for a missionary meeting that happened every Monday night. We knew the guys would be at that meeting. The room was packed so we didn’t find them until afterwards. I didn’t know it at the time, but later found out Matt was keeping an eye out and even saving a seat for me! Perhaps he was a little more interested than I thought!

After the meeting we all had jobs to get to, but we quickly met up so I could give him the breadsticks. I teased him a little about risking getting in trouble because we were not supposed to bring outside food into that area of the campus.

You have heard the saying that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. Well, that seems to be true in this case. I handed him the breadsticks, flirted a little, then began to walk away. I remember taking a few steps when he called my name. I turned around and that’s when I saw the change - he suddenly was looking at me in a completely different way then he had before. It was such a noticeable change in his eyes that it took me back a little (I may have even started blushing). “Do you mind if I give you a call sometime?” he asked.

“Sure, I don’t mind.” I answered. On the outside I may have looked calm and collected, but on the inside I was quite the opposite. I walked back to my room on cloud 9 I didn’t fully understand what just happened, but I knew something did and I was very excited to find out what exactly that would mean.
