Our Love Story - Part 4 - Little Changes

(I’m telling the story of how my husband and I met, dated, and got married. If you missed it, you can read Part 3 HERE.)

After giving him the breadsticks, I went back to my room and was busy the rest of the night.   Around 10:30 that night I was headed to a meeting we had every Monday night when someone handed me a note that had come through the nightly on-campus mail.  I didn’t recognized the handwriting so I opened it up and read it on my walk to the meeting.  It was a thank-you card.  I glanced down to the bottom of the card to see it was from Matt. My friend, Christy, who was walking next to me must have seen the look on my face when I saw who it was from.  She asked about it so I then told her all about Matt and how I really liked him.  She got so excited for me and started telling everyone that I got a note from a guy.  (I think everyone was so excited because this was a first for me. I didn’t talk about boys a lot.  Apparently, it was BIG news.). I did wondered how long it would take for Matt to actually call me like he had asked.  I figured it would be a while.  For now, I was content with the note.

Now, being a residence assistant, much of my job happened at night - beginning around 11pm.  I was downstairs in the lobby of the dorm doing my nightly thing when the phone rang.  “Bradley Desk” I answered.

“Hey.  How’s it going?”  It was him!  He called!  Pretty sure a smile immediately appeared on my face.

That first phone conversation wasn’t anything super special.  We didn’t talk about anything significant.  In fact, it only lasted a couple of minutes.  But it was important because I sensed yet again that things were different between us - in a good way.

The next couple of weeks were very busy with the winding down of the semester.  Over those weeks Matt would call every so often and we would chat.  Monday and Wednesday night suppers still happened with us and Josh and Betsey.  Our friendship was still growing, except now it seemed to have a bit of a more serious undertone to it.  I was still praying for God to change my feelings if it wasn’t meant to be.  But, seeing as how that wasn’t happening, I then started to wonder - could this be God’s will for me?

We were now down to the last night of the semester.  Christmas break was upon us. It was about 11:15 at night and I was at the desk in the lobby finishing up my work when the phone rang.  Much to my great delight, it was Matt.  We then began to talk.  And talk.  That conversation lasted almost 2 hours (way past when I should have been up, but I totally lost track of the time).  We covered all topics - about life, dating, marriage, convictions, and ministry.  We laughed - a lot.  And then we hung up.  I headed up to my room, thinking that was the best conversation I had ever had.  If I hadn’t fallen for Matt Sealy before, I definitely had now.  There was now no doubt in my mind - I was no longer content with just a friendship. I wanted to date him and be his girlfriend.   A title I never had because I had never felt that strongly about anyone before.

And while I was heading up to my room, Matt was back sitting at the desk in the lobby of his dorm.  He hung up the phone, looked at his friend, Caleb, who was down there as well and said, “I think I just found my wife.”
