Our Love Story - Part 2 - The Budding Friendship

(I’m telling the story of how my husband and I met, dated, and got married. If you missed Part 1, you can read it HERE.)

After that first meeting, I started seeing him everywhere on campus. We would run into each other all the time. It was then that we realized we had a lot of mutual friends. Which made it even more amazing to me that we had not met before we did. But as we know, God’s timing is perfect. I now know that we both would not have been ready for each other before then. It all happened at just the right point in our lives.

It ended up that we had an afternoon class together that semester on Monday’s and Wednesday’s. There was assigned seating and since my last name began with a “D” and his an “S,” we didn’t sit anywhere near each other. But I am big enough to admit that I would sit in just the perfect way that I could casually glance to the back of the room and catch a glimpse of him occasionally. (Don’t judge, many of you have done this type of thing too!) Funny thing is that I would often get caught - because he was looking at me too!

In that same class were two of our mutual friends - Betsey and Josh. Betsey and I had long-standing plans that after our classes on those days we would go to supper together. Often, before class, Betsey and Josh would make plans to have Josh meet up with us. And Josh, being one of Matt’s very good friends, would ask Matt to tag along as well. So it worked out that supper on Monday and Wednesday’s would find Josh, Matt, Betsey and I eating together. I would always try to act like it was no big deal, but secretly I enjoyed those meals very much. It was a good no-pressure way for us to get to know each other better. The four of us would talk about all kinds of things. And with each meal, I was getting to know him better. Through those conversations over the food, I found myself admiring him more and more.

As I said before, I was not going to make a move. I have three older brothers and over the years I watched many a girl flirt and act silly to get their attention. And I didn’t want to act like that. That’s not to say I never flirted, but I definitely reigned it in.

My admiration was growing for Matt, but there was a slight problem. He didn’t seem too interested in anything more than friendship. I didn’t want to get hung up on him, so I prayed. I prayed for Matt and I prayed about Matt. I asked the Lord to please help make my feelings for him to go away if this wasn’t God’s will. I had done this in the past with any other guy I had thought I was interested in and the feelings always went away. Only this time, it was different. This time, the feelings not only did not go away.

Instead, they got stronger.
