God’s Rainbow

We have entered the month of June. Over the next month, we are going to be seeing rainbows on pretty much everything, everywhere. So I thought it a good time to take a moment to remember where the rainbow actually came from and what it means.

God invented the rainbow. He made the very first one and He has made every one ever since.

God used the rainbow as a visual representation of His promise - His covenant - to Noah that He will never flood the earth again.

"And God said, 'This is the sign of the covenant that I make

between me and you and every living creature that is with you,

for all future generations: I have set my bow in the cloud,

and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth." Genesis 9:12-13

God's rainbow is a symbol of His grace, power, love, promises, and faithfulness. It is a thing of beauty that only He can create.

God's rainbow has 7 colours - the number of perfection, because God is perfect and all He does is perfect.

The world has tried to take over the rainbow for its own purposes. It has tried to change the meaning. It is interesting to note that the main rainbow we will see a lot this month has only 6 colors. I don't think this is an accident. This goes right along with what the world and culture has always done - taken something of God's and changed it.

The worldly meaning of the rainbow is going to be on full display this month. Already this morning, I have received multiple emails and seen several social media posts celebrating the world's interpretation of the rainbow.

We have a loving and just God. And we know that, in the end, anything that is not of God will crumble and fall. We know that God has already overcome the world:

"I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace.

In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 6:33

While it may seem disheartening to see God's beautiful promise twisted and turned to mean exactly opposite of what He created, we can take heart that He is not defeated. He gets the last word.

So for now, every time I see a rainbow this month, I am going to think on the wonderful promise that God made to Noah, along with all His other promises that He has made throughout His Word, and I am going to thank Him for His faithfulness, His love, and His power. And I am going to pray for those who may be deceived by the world's interpretation of the rainbow.

Because God's rainbow - His promises and grace - apply to all of us.
